Thanksgiving for All
By Tom O'Reilly / November 2017Insights
As we approach Thanksgiving, many of us may still be in recovery mode after hurricanes and wild fires or worried about recent events in the news. Some folks reading this message may feel this is the worst of times. Still, others are at peace and confident that everything will turn out for the best.
Nearly 400 years ago, the first Thanksgiving was organized after many devastating setbacks. The gathering was a celebration of perseverance, new friendships and hope for the future.
This week, my hope is that you will celebrate Thanksgiving with loved ones and reflect on the many reasons to be grateful. For those who can’t be with family, Friendsgiving is a tremendous tradition gathering friends for the annual celebration. No matter our current circumstances, we can look ahead with expectancy.
I am sending special thanks to our retail partners, global and national brands, as well as independent grocers and community stores. We were reminded of the importance of our local, loyal retailers when Hurricane Irma hit Florida in September. Retailers are our neighbors who help us weather the storms of life.
Of course, we can’t forget that the retail industry includes and supports a vast economy, including manufacturers, suppliers, farmers, logistics and technology providers and more. About 15.7 million people are employed in the retail industry.
Retail is a dominant force in our society that touches nearly everything we do. Savvy retailers are allowing access to purchase on mobile, social and virtual assistants such as Amazon’s Alexa, Google Home or Apple HomePod. Even smart appliances are getting in on the action with refrigerators managing shopping lists and washing machines ordering laundry detergent.
Following Thanksgiving, we experience Black Friday sales and then online shopping continues on Cyber Monday. Perhaps the most gratifying day that’s emerged is Giving Tuesday, being celebrated on November 28th, and kicking off the charitable season.
It’s truly an exciting time with countless reasons to be optimistic. I thank the team members of Aptaris, our partners and our clients. You are appreciated as we look ahead to the holidays and the New Year!
